10 – Shape of You by Ed Sheeran
I was Team “Castle on the Hill” when Ed decided to break records and release two singles simultaneously. At first, I thought “Shape of You” sounded like a leftover from his previous album compared to “Castle on the Hill”, which was a breath of fresh air. It didn’t help that “Shape of You” decided to invade all facets of my life and was inescapable. But time passed and I’d find myself singing it randomly. I’d hear it in a club and dance to it. I guess there was no point fighting the reality that “Shape of You” might just be brilliant.
9 – One More Light by Linkin Park
The sudden and tragic passing of Chester Bennington forced us to revisit their past and present music. And when you compare the two, you see a stark contrast. One was filled with anger and aggression, while the other was full of crisis and desolation. “One More Light” is a tribute the band created for their friend. And it’s now the tribute we collectively give to one of the greatest lead vocalists of this generation. No other song in 2017 has brought me close to tears.
8 – HUMBLE. By Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick is excellent with words. But I feel the arrangement with the piano riff on repeat and the siren synths during the chorus amplified the single to its full potential. Add to the recipe is his lack of humility in demonstrating his dominance over his peers and putting them in their place. No one will end up complaining if the output is this outstanding.
7 – New Rules by Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa has managed to create a banger that teaches us important life lessons. She’s pinned down the rules of engagement for breakups. Yet, life’s tragedy is it will remain a jam for the dancefloor and a helpful reminder after we’ve committed the mistakes again. Music can be powerful. But our heart’s stupidity is even more powerful.
6 – Passionfruit by Drake
If any artist deserves credit for bringing dancehall/tropical music to a massive scale in mainstream music, it would have to be Drake. Others may criticize him for crossing a thin and dangerous line. But I’d argue he made an entire genre more accessible to the public. The song’s title is ridiculous and the theme is reminiscent of Drake problems (i.e. loyalty in a long-distance relationship). But the arrangement and the beat on loop is crazy hell addictive that I’ve never gotten sick and tired of it.
5 – Thunder by Imagine Dragons
Following your dreams and not conforming to what everyone expects you to be are not new themes in music. But what sets “Thunder” apart is it does not sound like anything Imagine Dragons has ever done before. It sticks out like a sore thumb even among others on the radio. This has got to be the band’s most infectious and catchy tune yet. And it happened when they decided to spice things up and not be constrained by genre norms.
4 – Green Light by Lorde
I enjoyed music from Lorde’s debut album. But I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about her sophomore effort. Now having heard “Green Light” and the entirety of Melodrama, I must say that I am now a faithful devotee of Lorde. She is the weird and quirky friend of yours that surprisingly, can go out, have fun and deliver an upbeat and disco-friendly recording. The perfection lies in her imperfections.
3 – That’s What I Like by Bruno Mars
In recent years, Bruno Mars is one of the only artists who manage to thrive in both collaborations and solo outings. Sure, he’s had “Billionaire”, “Uptown Funk” and “Nothing on You”. But he’s delivered three successful and massive albums without relying on features. Crossover appeal and experimentation largely drive the need to pair up. But as “That’s What I Like” proves, you don’t need others to demonstrate swag, class and reinvention in music.
2 – Bad Liar by Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez gives us 2017’s best wake-up call. We have a belief that our infatuations escape the rest of the world and the ultimate discretion in letting that information out is within control. But “Bad Liar” gives us a dose of reality. The secrecy is nothing but an illusion. The subtle and understated arrangement perfectly complements Selena Gomez’ vocal stylings. She clearly doesn’t have the best voice. But today, she had something great to say.
1 – Slide by Calvin Harris featuring Frank Ocean and Migos
How would I describe the number one song of the year? To me, this is the most polished and refined a DJ’s record can be. It cannot get any better than this. While the contrarians and the critics begin to imagine how Calvin Harris and Frank Ocean are a match made in hell, the two have never sounded so liberated and inspired. When I first heard it, there was no huge spark, just admiration and a little bit of affection. But months passed and it turned out to be a masterpiece that only gets better with time.
